Here’s two incredible facts: 318576 views were made to my blog last year, being that, the country that most visited was the United States, followed by India, United Kingdom and Sweden.

01-Sandro-Pereira-blog-2016-Country-Stats

(In 2016, there was 50 new posts, growing the total of this blog to 534 posts)

And I had the opportunity, as a speaker, to present 14 sessions! A new personal record…

So once again let’s look back and reflect into what happened in 2016. In a few words, it was an interesting and challenge year both personal and professional!

Physical print copies of my book “BizTalk Mapping Patterns and Best Practices” was sold or give away in several Integration events last year like: Integrate 2016 London, BizTalk User Group Sweden in Stockholm and Gothenburg or TechMeet360. And I had the privilege of being present in most of them…

(Pro Integration Group PM Jim Harrer photobombing one of the pictures)

And I had – as a “well know writer” – my first book signing event experience at Integrate 2016 London – I felt a little awkward/strange to sign copies of my book, it’s not something I’m used to, strange, but a very pleasant and rich experience.

First experience at Channel 9 studio

At the MVP Summit 2016 in November, I had the opportunity to record a segment in the Channel 9 studio, that was my first experience, and I have to confess, I was a little nervous to be recording in a small professional studio, so as I was expecting after seeing the record in its raw state, the end result could have been better, but, for a first experience it went pretty well. The important for me is to face new challenges, different situations, leave my comfort zone and improve to be better next time. The segment is not public yet, but I will be sure to post when it is.

Fortunately, I had the company of my good friend Kent Weare in this small “adventure”:

He is probably one of the few people that I know that I wasn’t able to convince him to buy my book. Instead, he tried to convince me that he could help him sell more books  if I gave him a free copy 🙂

TUGA IT 2016

Being responsible to organize the Integration track and one Integration Workshop at TUGA IT event, one of the major biggest events in Portugal that targets several distinct technologic areas like SharePoint and Office 365, Azure Infrastructure, Data Platform, Programming and Integration (BizTalk, IoT and Azure) and much more.

Having that role, I was able to invite and convince some of my good friends to speak at this event: Nino Crudele, Steef-Jan Wiggers, Sam Vanhoutte and Glenn Colpaert.

21-TugaIT-Steef22-TugaIT-Nino23-TUGAIT-Glenn24-TugaIt-Sam25-TUGAIT-2016

And I was able to perform a one day deep dive workshop about Enterprise Integration with my dear friends Nino Crudele and Steef-Jan Wiggers…. what amazing experience combining three different and experienced experts in one room to share knowledge

Integrate 2016 London

As always, I was really happy and proud to speak at the biggest integration (Microsoft related technologies) event worldwide: Integrate 2016 London that was amazingly well organized by Saravana Kumar and his BizTalk360 team. The statistics of this year’s INTEGRATE 2016 event stood at 380 attendees, 187 Companies from 22 different countries and the key highlight of the welcome session was the announcement of the availability of a printed version of my “BizTalk Mapping Patterns” book… Once agan,Thanks Saravana and BizTalk360 team!

This event is always an amazing and unique opportunity to learn from some of well-known experts in the field and to meet the people you have been following on Twitter and blogs and other social networks who are interested in the same things you are.

Here is a different perspective of the event… The speaker’s vision:

And here I am with the Microsoft Pro Integration Team and some of the MVPs present at the event:

MVP Summit 2016, meet the all Microsoft BizTalk team and the reunion of BizTalkCrew

The greatest thing about attending the MVP Summit is the networking part… reconnect with some friends, meet the product group, have great technical discussions and enjoy… and that was exactly what happened this year. I cannot discuss the technical part (NDA) but here is the fun part:

  • I was able to record a session at Channel9 (which I mentioned earlier)
  • Attending my first Seahawks game

31-Me-At-SeaHawks-game31-SeaHawks-2

  • First experience at a Shooting range with most of all BizTalk MVPs… just to confirm that I am not a fun of guns… but it was a really fun experience

32-Me-At-Shooting-range

  • Engagements with the product teams during the event and outside the event… here visiting the Museum of Flight with Mikael Håkansson, Johan Hedberg and Clemens Vasters

  • Meet the all Microsoft BizTalk team (or Pro Integration Team), here is a picture of some MVPs in meeting room were the Logic App team records their Logic Apps Live webcast

  • And the BizTalk Crew was reunited once again

A year of speaking engagements…

Another year full of speaking engagements… I had the opportunity to delivery 14 sessions! Speaking about different topics like: BizTalk Server, Logic Apps, API Management, App Service, Azure Functions, Microsoft Flow or PowerApps, in multiple events across Europe (UK, Sweden and Portugal) and some of them through live meetings. New personal record!

Some of them I already mentioned above but here is the complete list of speaking engagements that I did in 2016:

  • XV Porto.Data Event: Build your first LogicApp from scratch (No slides)

Thanks for all the support and encouragement given throughout this year and hope that the next will be a year filled with new articles, I promise that I will continue to share knowledge hoping that they can help someone.

To all my readers, friends, coworkers (amazing guys at DevScope), Microsoft Integration Community (BizTalk, Logic Apps, API Management, Service Bus and so on), all the Portuguese Communities, my MVP “family” and of course to my family, I hope you have a beautiful holiday period with your near and dear ones – Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

A goal from Eder, at the 109 minutes of the match, it was worth the European champion title to Portugal, an unprecedented title in Portuguese football, succeeding our neighbor Spain.

PORTUGAL are the Euro 2016 champions. No matter what anyone says or does, that will not change.

Portugal-Euro-2016-champion

(photo from: UEFA)

No matter now saying that we all (the Portuguese people) believed. It is easy to speak when things are over and we all know the end result but the reality is that even though we all have believed in the beginning, during the group phase we all doubt and at some point we all throw the towel to the floor… except on man who had the task to lead the group and encourage a handful of great players: coach Fernando Santos!

He said after the null against Austria (second match): "I only return to Portugal on 11th and I will be received in party" –he was criticized/joked by everyone. I was one of these unbelieving that believed that the only way for that to happens was if he was staying on holiday in France to see the other games.

Sorry for doubting you mister Fernando Santos… But we start to believe after we beat Croatia in the Round of 16… and you all know the rest of the story… we were unstoppable, tremendous efficiency, and despite a lot of criticism about him, I never saw Ronaldo playing so well for is team and he was there when we need him.

We are champions and the feeling is tremendously good, these is a people that deserved this for many years!

But… I this – Portugal been European Champion will affect the Integrate2017 in London, even without Saravana Kumar knowing yet?

Well, if you already attended to a BizTalk/Integrate event in London, you probably realized that sometimes we (the speakers) like to play tricks to each other… it happened in 2014 with Johan using a Canadian Hockey jersey (lost a bet against Kent), this year the revenge with a picture of Ken using a Sweden Hockey Jersey. And for that reason, I’m happy to public announce, again even without Saravana Kumar knowing, we already have two confirmed speakers for Integrate2017:

  • Steef-Jan Wiggers (wearing Pepe number 3 Portugal green jersey)
  • and Mikael Hakansson (wearing Cristiano Ronaldo number 7 Portugal jersey)!

How did that happen?
Well let’s say that Portugal wasn’t the favorite team within our MVP’s Integration WhatsApp group (Spain, Germany or Belgium were there favorites teams) with the exception of Kent Weare that supported Portugal from day 1… So after Croatia, even without knowing the result of Wales and Belgium and thinking that we would play against Belgium, I bet with Steef-Jan Wiggers (at that time a Belgium supporter J) that Portugal will reach the final!

Lost-bet-Steef

Why Pepe? Because he is a Barcelona fan and doesn’t like Pepe too much Smile.

In the final, I had 99% support of all MVP’s with the exception of Mikael – the only one supporting French – and I had bet with him, he gave power to Johan Hedberg to accept all the deals while he was in vacations, that if Portugal won the tournament he would have to wear the jersey your pet’s enemy: CR7 (also a Barcelona fan). He is now trying to find reasons to get away and not fulfill the bet Smile.

In both cases if I had lost I would have worn the jersey of Barcelona – Messi (although good player is by far one of my favorite players) or use the Spain jersey in my session in London… ufff I’m safe from that but I always believed!

Congratulations Portugal!

So what happened in 2015? Many things! But, shortly, it was a good year both personal and professional, the end of last year was crazy in terms of projects, so crazy that I didn’t had any free time to write new posts on my blog (a thing that I enjoy doing)… I even thought I had published a few posts this year (at least considerably less than last year)… SURPRISE! Despite all that I still was able to publish 27 more post than last year, in a total of 97 post!

In 2015, there were 79 new posts, growing the total archive of this blog to 482 posts.

I just released yesterday, but I’ve decided to do a small update to this tool bringing new functionalities in order to solve some limitations, especially Character Encoding problem.

Portuguese language have many letters with accents and while importing/reading the files in the previous version, all accented letters are printed as a question mark. It was obvious that I had a problem with Encoding.

Again, “Microsoft Message Queuing Testing Tool” is a simple tool that you can use to test sending files to Microsoft Queue in order to evaluate whether other applications are reading correctly the messages.

I’m using it to send messages to a queue that is being consumed by BizTalk Server

RELEASE NOTES

Version 2.0 brings:

  • Improvements in the “Message Label” auto fill
  • Improvements in the “Import Message File” functionality with better control of the encoder associated with the file
    • Add the ability to choose the code page identifier

Microsoft-Message-Queuing-Testing-Tool-v2

Hope you enjoy it.

You can download this tool here:

Microsoft Message Queuing Testing Tool (79,9 KB)
Microsoft | Code Gallery

In the last couple of days I been working (migrating a BizTalk Solution from BizTalk Server 2004 to BizTalk Server 2013 R2) in a solution that works deeply with Microsoft Message Queuing (MSMQ). It receives messages from private queue with the use of the MSMQ Adapter and send messages to other Queues (among other channels) that are consumed by other applications/servers.

And one of the things that I intended to do was partial tests, in a very simple way, to validate if all my receive ports were well configured in order to consume the expected messages.

Microsoft Message Queuing Testing Tool” is a simple tool that you can use to test sending files to Microsoft Queue.

Microsoft Message Queuing or MSMQ is a message queue implementation developed by Microsoft and deployed in its Windows Server operating systems and enables applications running at different times to communicate across heterogeneous networks and systems that may be temporarily offline. It provides guaranteed message delivery, efficient routing, security, and priority-based messaging.

With this tool you can easily send messages to a queue in order to evaluate whether other applications are reading correctly the messages.

Microsoft-Message-Queuing-Testing-Tool

This tool allows you to set:

  • The queue where you want to send the files/messages
  • A Label associated to the file/message
  • The Queue transaction type
  • Import an existing file or manually add a message

Microsoft-Message-Queuing-Testing-Tool-result

And it will provide:

  • success of delivery information (with transaction id)
  • or error detail information

I like simple tool that allow me to test my integration scenarios/projects, so I decided today to take some of my time to create this very simple and basic tools, but at least for me, that will be very useful.

Hope you enjoy also.

I know that is not the coolest app that you will find, nor was that the goal, but probably will be the first BizTalk Blog available for your band Smile

Microsoft Band helps you live healthier and achieve more by tracking your heart rate, exercise, calorie burn, and sleep quality, and helps you be productive with email, text, and calendar alerts… and now also your favorite blog (or not Smile)

I had (and still have) the original Microsoft Band but on my last trip to the United States, in which I was attend in another MVP Summit in Redmond, I decided to buy the new Microsoft Band 2 and while I was searching about new features and capabilities I found out that Microsoft had announced, more or less this last July, some new features and functionality for both the Microsoft Band and Microsoft Health, especially the Web Tiles. And with that, the capability for this device to receive glanceable information from nearly any source.

So, just for fun I decide play around with this features and create the “SandroaspBizTalkBlog Web Tile” that will allow you to “track” my blog from your new or old Microsoft Band.

This way, when a new blog post will be published you will receive a notification on your wrist!

You can download the “SandroaspBizTalkBlog Web Tile” here:

To install it you just need to open the “mytile.webtile” from your mobile device that has the Microsoft Health application installed. The app will do the rest.

Notes From The Road: 2014 in review

So many things happen in 2014, for me it was a year of radical changes in my life, most of them extremely good others less so but in the end it was once again a professional and personal remarkable year for me.

Released my first book…

In partnership with BizTalk360 (the publisher) and my company DevScope, I was able to produce and publish my first book completely free for the community. A book that was announce in Oslo, Norway during the last BizTalk Innovation day of 2014.

BizTalk Mapping Patterns and Best Practices” book is a 400-page recipe that offers insights on how maps work, the most common patterns in real time scenarios, and best practices for BizTalk Developers to develop effective, robust, and organized maps. The book has as technical reviewers Steef-Jan Wiggers, Nino Crudele, Michael Stephenson and José António Silva and is available for you to download at BizTalk360 website here.

Multiple speaking engagements…

I had the opportunity to be present, has a speaker, in multiple events across Europe (UK, Norway and Portugal). But the most relevant, due to its main objective, was in April of 2014, where DevScope and I participated on the second Global Windows Azure Bootcamp, an event held in 138 locations around the globe. This allowed all participants to have a one day deep dive class and get up to speed on developing Cloud Computing Applications for Windows Azure. In addition to this great learning opportunity, the hands on labs featured launching a huge global compute farm to perform diabetes research using the contributions (processing time) from all participants all over the globe.

During the event our team (DevScope Team) dedicated a total of 159 of our virtual machines, spread over 5 Azure Datacenters worldwide. The final statistics were recently published and, although not all processing was leveraged, our overall effort is still 38% of all Portuguese contribution.

Overall Statistics for DevScope, Portugal

  • Total worker role instances: 140
  • Total targets processed: 1441
  • Total processing time: 5 days 14 hours 8 minutes.

Here is the complete list of speaking engagements that I had in 2014:

  • BizTalk Summit 2014 London (March 3rd & 4th)

  • Global Windows Azure Bootcamp – Lisboa (March 29)

For me is always a great honor and joy to be participating in events, either as speaker or attendee, be with old friends, meet new people and share knowledge!

And yet had the opportunity to attend some events like:

  • MVP Global Summit 2014
