Because yesterday Portugal was European Champion I decide today to give a gift to the community by making an earlier release of my Microsoft Integration Stencils Pack.

After the major release in June 16, I started to realize that with so many stencils it was becoming a little hard to find, or rather, I was spending too much time to find some representations that I wanted to use in my diagrams. Don’t get me wrong, I will continue to add new stencils and I already did in this release, however, the major improvement that I’m trying to make is to divide the Stencils in different files for a better organization.

With these new additions, this package now contains an astounding total of ~831 (~100 additions) (symbols/icons) that will help you visually represent Integration architectures (On-premise, Cloud or Hybrid scenarios) and solutions diagrams in Visio 2016/2013. It will provide symbols/icons to visually represent features, systems, processes and architectures that use BizTalk Server, Microsoft Azure and related technologies.

  • BizTalk Server
  • Microsoft Azure
    • BizTalk Services
    • Azure App Service (API Apps, Web Apps, Mobile Apps, PowerApps and Logic Apps)
    • Microsoft Flow
    • Event Hubs
    • Service Bus
    • API Management, IoT and Docker
    • Machine Learning, Stream Analytics, Data Factory, Data Pipelines
    • and so on
  • PowerBI
  • PowerShell
  • And many more…

Divided in 8 files to be easier to maintain and find the right shapes:

  • Microsoft Integration Stencils v2.0 (420 shapes)
  • MIS Apps and Systems Logo Stencils (69 shapes)
  • MIS IoT Devices Stencils (123 shapes)
  • MIS Support Stencils (101 shapes)
  • MIS Servers and Hardware v2.1 (39 shapes)
  • MIS Originals v2.1 (22 shapes)
  • MIS Users (27 shapes)
  • MIS Devices v2.1 (30 shapes)

Finally, I found some extra minutes to be able to write and after spending all my available free time over the last few weeks, mainly in researching but also in creating several ones… I’m happy to say that a major version, 360 new shapes – that is the double of the previous version, of Microsoft Integration Stencils Pack for Visio 2016/2013 is now available for you to download.

With these new additions, this package now contains an astounding total of 721 shapes (symbols/icons) that will help you visually represent Integration architectures (On-premise, Cloud or Hybrid scenarios) and solutions diagrams in Visio 2016/2013. It will provide symbols/icons to visually represent features, systems, processes and architectures that use BizTalk Server, Microsoft Azure and related technologies.

  • BizTalk Server
  • Microsoft Azure
    • BizTalk Services
    • Azure App Service (API Apps, Web Apps, Mobile Apps, PowerApps and Logic Apps)

    • API Management, IoT and Docker
    • Machine Learning, Stream Analytics, Data Factory, Data Pipelines
    • and so on
  • PowerBI

  • And many more…

With so many new shapes, I decide to divide the package in 4 files to be easier to maintain and find the right shapes:

  • Microsoft Integration Stencils v2.0 (416 shapes)
  • MIS Apps and Systems Logo Stencils (60 shapes)
  • MIS IoT Devices Stencils (123 shapes)
  • MIS Support Stencils (122 shapes)

Again, I didn’t create all of this shapes, maybe half of them, the other half was the work of gathering all the available resources and combine them together, for example, if you’re looking for more or official Azure Visio stencils, then you can find them here: Microsoft Azure, Cloud and Enterprise Symbol / Icon Set – Visio stencil, PowerPoint, PNG.

There are still many points that could be improved as well as adding new stencils but I hope you like the final result.

Some time ago, I do not remember when or where I was asked to provide some examples of diagrams that I use in my documentation or some diagrams representations in which I use the Visio Stencils for BizTalk Server

I know that no one likes to create documentation, is boring, it can be a challenging task, but documentation is an important part on every BizTalk Integration projects or for infrastructures operations management and administration. They will help you in many critical situation and will reduce the time needed to carry out different procedures like finding were the machines are hosted, how many machines your environment have, what are the actors (systems, protocols) in a given solution and so on. You can have at least three types of documentation when it comes to BizTalk:

  • Infrastructure Overview
  • Solution Overview
  • Technical Overview

Or as Steef-Jan mentioned in one of this posts:

  • BizTalk Environment (Design) document
  • Functional Design of BizTalk Solution
  • Technical (Design) of BizTalk Solution

Visio is great for creating multiple kinds of diagrams, unfortunately, the set of stencils and shapes, which out-of-the-box come with Visio provably are not sufficient to cover the kinds of diagrams we need with our BizTalk/Integration projects or they are not easy to use and read. Visio 2013 Stencil for BizTalk Server and Visio 2010 Stencil for BizTalk Server can easily help you creating documentation for the first two: BizTalk Environment (Design) document and Functional Design of BizTalk Solution. They are a collection of 73 modern flat Visio 2013 shapes that will help you representing BizTalk Server physical architectures, Integration architectures (Cloud or Hybrid scenarios) or solutions diagrams in Visio 2013 and 2010.

Infrastructure Overview Samples

This logical diagram describes the overview of your BizTalk environments where you can specify the Infrastructure of your production, UAT, testing or developer environments.

Here are some samples of:

  • Complex logical diagram of your Infrastructure

  • Basic logical diagram of your Infrastructure

BizTalk-Infrastructure-Overview-Samples-2

  • Or for example a diagram representing a logical diagram of your BizTalk Group and Host Infrastructure

BizTalk-Host-Infrastructure-Overview-Sample

Solution Overview Samples

This logical diagram depicts a view of the solution. It will describe how solution will work, who are the actors, what type of protocols and so on.

Here are some samples of solution diagrams:

  • Complex logical diagrams

BizTalk-Solution-Overview-Sample BizTalk-Solution-Overview-Sample-2

  • Or basic logical diagram

BizTalk-Solution-Overview-Sample-3

This documentation should be available to all stakeholders within your organization: developer, operation and administration team.

Contrary to what many might think some kind of documentation is pretty straight forward and can be realized with minimal effort but have an enormous importance in the organization when you need to make changes inside your solution or infrastructure.

First of all I have to say thanks and welcome to the recent contributor Michael Stephenson to this project.

I’m sure he probably don’t need any introductions, never the less, Michael Stephenson is a UK based integration specialist who has worked with many consultancies and customers delivering integration solutions based on Microsoft technologies such as BizTalk and Windows Azure. He is heavily involved in community activities such as the UK Connected Systems User Group and speaking at events across Europe. Michael has also been a Microsoft Integration MVP for the past 5 years.

Having said that and thanks to Michael contributions, there’s a new release available of “Collection of Visio 2013 Stencil for BizTalk Server” with 3 new modern flat Visio 2013 shapes making a total of 76 modern flat shapes that you can use and resize without losing quality:

This week I published 73 modern flat shape that will help you representing BizTalk Server physical architectures, Integration architectures (Cloud or Hybrid scenarios) or solutions diagrams in Visio 2013. However I found out that many people are still using Visio 2010, so I thought it would be a good idea to provide these new shapes also for Visio 2010… The result was 63 new modern flat shapes that are now joining the 35 shapes that already existed (two of them were remove from this version) making a total of a total of 98 shapes, representing:

  • BizTalk topologies (Standalone and Clustering)
  • BizTalk Runtime Architecture and ESB Toolkit
  • Receive and Send Pipelines, Inbound and Outbound Maps, Adapters and Filters
  • Receive Ports and Receive Locations (One-way and Request Response)
  • Send Ports (One-way and Solicit-Response)
  • BizTalk Out-of-box Adapters shapes
    • SMTP, SQL, File, FTP, SFTP, MSMQ, …
  • Windows Azure BizTalk Services and Cloud shapes
  • And many more…

  • Certificates, RFID, Gateway, Secure Message and many more…

BizTalk-Server-Stencils-For-Visio-2013

As I said in my previous post, this is a major upgrade, apart from improve some of the existing shapes, several shapes were removed (like logo types and “static” receive port representations)… but many new ones were created for example: “Cloud” and “Bridges and other to provide better representation of receive and send ports. For you to have a good perspective we went from 37 to 73 available shapes that you can use and resize without losing quality!

Another big complaints that existed in the previous version was:

  • The size of the stencil file – 26,5MB
  • And the lack parameterization or flexibility on some of the shapes, specially receive and send ports shapes available

Well this two issues were solved this version. The size of the file is now 822KB! And all the shapes can be modify or reconfigured and you can apply different design templates.

There are still some points that could be improved as well as adding new stencil and I expect next month to release a new version with some of these improvements.

Instructions:

  • Download the file and copy to the folder “C:\Users\you_user\Documents\My Shapes” (that is the default folder for the Visio custom shapes)
  • To access the shapes in Visio, select from the Shapes Windows: “More Shapes -> My Shapes -> BizTalkServerStencilsForVisio2013.vssx”
